How Board of Aldermen Meetings Work

Board of Aldermen meetings are where many local issues are discussed in public and where formal decisions are often made. They are an important part of how residents can follow city business, understand what is being considered, and see how decisions move forward.

How Meetings Usually Work

In general, city meetings follow a public process. A meeting is scheduled in advance, a notice and agenda are posted, background materials may be prepared, and the governing body meets to discuss items and take action when needed. Depending on the topic, that action might involve discussion, a public hearing, a vote on an ordinance or resolution, or direction for next steps. Missouri’s Sunshine Law requires public governmental bodies to post a notice and tentative agenda at least 24 hours before a meeting.

In Lake Saint Louis, the Board of Aldermen holds work sessions at 5:30 p.m. on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month at City Hall. Board of Aldermen meetings are also listed through the city’s calendar and Agenda Center, where residents can find agendas, meeting packets, and minutes. Minutes are available following approval.

Before, During, and After a Meeting

What to Look for Before a Meeting

In general, the most helpful place to start before a meeting is the agenda. The agenda shows the items expected to be discussed. In some cases, there may also be supporting materials such as a meeting packet, prior minutes, ordinances, resolutions, staff information, or other documents related to the topics being considered.

In Lake Saint Louis, agendas are available before Board of Aldermen meetings, and meeting packets are often posted through the Agenda Center. These materials can help residents see what is expected to be discussed and what information is being considered in advance.

What Happens After a Meeting

In general, minutes are prepared after a meeting to provide the official written record of what happened. Minutes are different from an agenda because they reflect actions taken, rather than what was expected to be discussed before the meeting.

In Lake Saint Louis, minutes are available following approval. The city’s Board of Aldermen page and Agenda Center both provide access to agendas and minutes, which helps residents review past meetings and follow what has been discussed or decided over time.

What Happens During a Meeting

In general, meetings move through an agenda in a set order. That may include opening the meeting, reviewing prior minutes, presentations, public hearings, discussion of new or old business, ordinances or resolutions, and votes. Depending on the issue, some items may involve discussion only, while others may lead to formal action.

In Lake Saint Louis, Board of Aldermen meetings and work sessions are part of the city’s regular meeting process. Residents can review the posted agenda and packet in advance to better understand what is expected to be discussed, and Board meetings are where many key city discussions and votes take place.
